Treading Water No More!

For the last six months, it’s felt a bit like I’ve been treading water. And as a guy who’s never been all that buoyant, treading water takes some work! Unsure of whether God would have me continue doing ministry in Long Beach, or move to Fullerton to serve at EvFree, it was hard to dream about the future, because I wasn’t sure what kind of future I was supposed to be dreaming about. So I simply endeavored to be faithful in the ministry right in front of me, and those daily movements of God kept me afloat (like spiritual water-wings, if you must complete the metaphor).

But my friends, the time for treading water is finally over! In the last month God has confirmed with incredible clarity that it is indeed His plan for my family and me to join you all in the ongoing work of the ministry at EvFree, and we couldn’t be more excited! You have welcomed us with open arms, eager hearts, and great expectations for what God has planned, and you’ve certainly made us feel at home.

So as we enter together into this new chapter of the beautiful story God is writing over the years at our church, I’ve been thinking about Ephesians 4:1–3 where it says, “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace,” and I want to ask you to join me in a few key endeavors.

First, we’ve all got to continue praying. You’ve already been praying faithfully for a new Senior Pastor to arrive. Now I would ask you to continue to pray that God would be increasingly glorified in our church, that our people would be bold ambassadors of Christ in our city, and that our leadership will abide in the Lord Jesus, remaining humble, discerning, and full of joy in the days ahead.

Second, we’ve all got to redouble our efforts to love and serve one another. If you had the opportunity to join me for any of our question and answer times last week, you likely heard me say that the way forward for our church (and every church) is unity in sacrifice. Churches flourish when everyone sacrifices something. This isn’t some newfangled church strategy or post-modern management tip, it’s simply the model that Christ set for us, and that His disciples replicated in the early church. So take a few moments and consider where you have been making sacrifices already, and then ask the Holy Spirit to both show you where you can sacrifice more, and then to empower you to obediently step into those opportunities.

Lastly, let’s all start to dream about where God would have us go together. Let’s ask God to unite us in a common vision for the future of His Kingdom and EvFree’s part in that big picture. Let’s ground ourselves in the Scriptures, and then use that foundation as an anchor point to lean into what’s next.

No more treading water for us! Let’s get rid of those water-wings and start to swim for the horizon. And don’t forget, you should never swim alone. Always take a buddy. I’m excited to go further together than any of us could ever have gone alone!

God bless you, and keep reminding me of your names. Sooner or later I’ll memorize them all.
