Passing the Baton

It was just over 25 years ago that I stepped foot into the EvFree youth ministry for the first time. I was 11 years old and had just trusted my life to Jesus the summer before. I was warmly welcomed into a core group of a bunch of guys who would soon become my best friends. Some of the greatest memories I would make and some of the greatest spiritual growth I would experience in my youth years would take place as a part of the youth ministry here. Never would I have guessed that almost exactly ten years later I would be starting my career in ministry as the 7th Grade Lead Associate in the junior high ministry, right here in the same room I first entered a decade earlier.

The shaping that God has done in my life personally, and the incredible work I have seen God do in the lives of students over this last season of ministry has been powerful, to say the least. And now, after 15 years of serving here as a lead associate, junior high pastor and high school pastor, I get the great gift of passing the baton of the high school ministry off to another young pastor to depend on God to lead and shape this ministry for His glory for the years to come. It is a bittersweet experience for my family and me. Bitter only because we LOVE students and have cherished every moment of being deeply invested in their journeys of faith. Sweet in that we are not going anywhere and still get to oversee the student and family ministries here at the church. Also sweet because I have the privilege of handing off the high school ministry to someone I greatly trust and respect.

This is where I get to brag about Tim Hummel, our new High School Pastor. I have known Tim since he was a student in our ministry here and have had the great joy of having Tim serve on my staff as a volunteer and as a High School Guys Director over the past six years. I am so thrilled to see how God will use Tim’s passion and gifts to shape and lead the High School Ministry. He is a phenomenal teacher, great leader, and intentional discipler of students and our students are lucky and blessed to have him step into this important role.

Scott Belon
Pastor to Students & Families

Just like Scott, I have been transformed while being a student, leader, and lead associate in the High School Ministry. But no pastor, program, event, or leader is the true reason anyone’s heart has been drawn to Jesus here at EvFree. God has chosen to work through this ministry and that is the reason I am passionate about it. God loves the High School students in Fullerton and the surrounding area and that is why I love them. I, and the HSM staff along with me, have faith that God will pursue these students in the upcoming weeks and months and years. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it!
