| A country
suffering from recent internal and regional unrest, Burundi survives
primarily on subsistence agriculture. With a growing percentage of
the population suffering from AIDS, the importance of addressing the
issue is growing. Over two-thirds of the population live below the
poverty line, with few opportunities to grow their income or access
financial services.
However, a new day has dawned in Burundi with free democratic elections
ending a 12-year war. Hundreds of thousands of refugees are streaming
back to Burundi from Tanzania and Congo. World Relief works with
churches and the local communities in Southern Burundi to provide
housing, health facilities, clean water sources, churches, seeds
and tools, and emergency food supplies to refugees who are returning
to destroyed homes and communities.
Missions Pastor Dan Crane and Africa Hope launch leader Brad Rose
traveled to Burundi this past Fall to see the work there, and Brad
will return in June 2006 to lead a team from our church doing compassion
work and reconstruction there. |
